The Full Story

Calvary Chapel Newark is the result of God working in the hearts of about fifty people, who had been a part of a mainline denomination that they felt was not honoring the inerrant Word of God or the traditions of historical Christianity. Thus, after much prayer, they decided to leave and to form Calvary Chapel Newark. In the process, they chose Pastor Doug Copen and his wife, Lisa to lead them in this new venture of faith. (Doug was a former pastor at Zanesville Calvary Chapel.)

In August of 2019, Calvary Chapel Newark held their first service. It was an outdoor service, held at Doug and Lisa’s home, and from there, the church has blossomed. CCN has gone from the Lookup Ministry building on O'Bannon Avenue to Cherry Valley Lodge and now to its present location at 1640 North 21st Street. While at Cherry Valley Lodge, Pastor Doug passed away from COVID on Christmas night of 2020.

The team of Elders assumed preaching responsibilities and Lisa Copen led the music ministry in the aftermath of Doug going home to the Lord. The Elders relied on the leading of the Holy Spirit in the search to find the next leader of CCN. Pastor Aaron Snyder and his family came to be with us in May of 2022.

With a heart to reach their surrounding community with the Good News of Jesus Christ and the systematic teaching of the Word of God, CCN is looking to impact the people of Licking County for the cause of Christ.

Four Core Values at
Calvary Chapel Newark

Vibrant Bible Teaching

In order to love God, we must know him. To know God, we must first learn about him. We must come to know his voice, his manners, his conduct, his life, his love, his majesty and beauty and all this in a way that we can understand. Vibrant Bible Teaching inspires, exhorts, encourages, and equips us with the tools we need to live the purposeful life of a Jesus-follower.

“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” — 2 Timothy 4:2

Authentic Worship

Authentic Worship is more than just notes and songs, it’s an attitude of glad submission to the author of all things. It’s a position of reverent awe in the dazzling brilliance of the overwhelming radiance of the Lord. It’s a lifestyle marked by joyful submission to the one who knows all things and does all things.

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” — John 4:24

Genuine Discipleship

Mere information is of little profit until it has worked itself into the meaningful rhythms of our life. We desire that the love of God and one another would become like a song that we carry in our hearts from our rising in the morning to our last thoughts at night. That we would worship the Lord not only in word, but also in deed.

“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love.” — John 15:8–10

Global Impact

Our church has a deep and rich history in missions. Sending and supporting missions work is one of our greatest joys and a way to give back to the Lord who has given so much for us.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!’” — Romans 10:14–15
